5 FITNESS TIPS FOR THE NEW YEAR

As the holiday season ends, you might be carrying around a few extra pounds of holiday weight. This makes January a great month to commit to getting fit. Despite our best intentions, many of us still struggle to get back in shape. Here are some great fitness tips to get back in shape for the new year.

5 Fitness Tips for the New Year

Fitness Tip #1: Don’t Make Resolutions, Set Goals Instead

New Year’s resolutions are notoriously difficult to maintain. This is often because we focus on unrealistic goals that would be impossible for anyone to achieve all at once. Try to avoid resolutions. Set simple, achievable goals that you can reach in the near future. After you reach your first goal, you can set another and another and before you know it, you’ll have reached a major fitness goal.

Fitness Tip #2: Improve Your Nutrition

Many people think that if you exercise regularly, you can eat whatever you want and not worry about it. This is completely false. Look at ways in which you can improve your diet. Reduce sugar, and processed foods. Create more balanced meals with low fat proteins and lots of fresh produce.

Fitness Tip #3: Avoid Diets

Diets are difficult to maintain, and they can even be unhealthy. Certain fad diets can even do more harm than good to your health. Living a healthy lifestyle does not mean that you cut things out of your diet. It means that you add more healthy, balanced meals into your life. It’s all about balance.

Fitness Tip #4: Start Small

Another reason why people find it challenging to maintain a fitness routine is that they try to do too much all at once. Aim for small goals. If you are rather sedentary, aim for 5-10 minutes of exercise. Slowly move up to 30 minutes a day. Even a brisk walk counts. As you get more fit, and achieve more goals, you will be able to slowly increase the amount of time spent, and your difficulty level.

Fitness Tip #5 Do Something Fun

Don’t pick an activity that you dislike. Some people force themselves to run or join a class because they think it will help them get fit. The problem is, if you are not having fun, you are far more likely to quit. Sure, you are going to need to push yourself a bit, but select activities that you enjoy. Perhaps you enjoy something like cycling, dancing, or swimming. Just find something you really enjoy doing, and you are more likely to keep it up.
